Windmills were incredibly important because they performed so many critical tasks for survival of the low-lying country of The Netherlands. In the past, windmills also enabled the Dutch to build wooden ships on an industrial scale, which allowed them to dominate the world's seas and become a wealthy and powerful trading nation in the early 1700s.
